Description

The listing, ANTIQUE VICTORIAN MARKED ROLLED GOLD SHELL DANCE PURSE COMPACT CARRY- ALL W/SAPPHIRE CLOSURE ESTATE has ended.

For your consideration is this very old victorian compact dance purse. It has a sapphire closure and is marked "rolled gold shell" on the inside lid of the coin compartment. Original chain handle. It does have a few problems for being over a century old, according to the seller, however . The mirror is intact but losing a little of its backing and not a tight frame as shown. The finish on the outside could use a good buffing due to wear I suspect. It closes tightly with a little more force than I am used to giving one. On the one end it appears it may have had perhaps another sapphire that is missing as shown in picture. Overall, its in fair condition, since you just don't see many of these beauties anymore. Always glad to answer any questions. Smoke free and pet free home. Thank you for looking and Happy Bidding! Please only Listia verified addresses. All Listia rules applied. I do not do GINS yet so please don't ask me, nor do I lessen days. I like to keep things fair for everyone.

The only markings I saw was the "rolled gold shell" on top of the coin compartment. I'm trying to get a picture of some kind of marking, perhaps a makers mark, with my camera now. I just can't make it out with my eyes.

Even a jeweler's cloth will remove traces of gold. It is up for auction, it is best left as is and leave it to the new owner how they wish to have the item restored. The reddish metal visible is the copper core metal below the rolled gold overlay. Indeed another 'sapphire' was on the piece at one time. It triggers the compartment behind the mirror. A flat screw driver placed gently in the slot may open that for you now. Picture #5 shows the Mirror does have a row of hinge tabs all it's own= something was meant to be accessed behind it. But the obvious damage shows someone tried already to pry open that compartment. This damage is why it is harder to close. You may wish to look more closely at the chain, it may not be plated but solid. I do not see any wear area's on the chains surface even where one's hands would of carried the piece.

Wow, thanks Jeweler. I haven't touched it since I bought it. A d absolutely will leave it to the new owner. Any ideas on that makers mark?

By compact, do you mean this purse carried makeup? Can it hold a credit card or cash?

Hi Mary. Well back then there were no credit cards, but it does have a coin & bill compartment as shown in the pictures. Lol. Thank you for your interest.

Treasures I have tried really hard using a magnifying glass to get a good pic of the marks for you. I hope your eyes can make them out better than mine.

Nice find! Because it is rolled gold, I wouldn't suggest buffing the outside, like you mentioned. There's a good chance you would remove some of the finish by doing any kind of vigorous rubbing or buffing.

You are do right about buffing in that regard. I meant with a jewelers cloth. Thank you.
