taken off the interweb: The proper name is the Claddagh. It is an Irish/Celtic symbol of friendship/hands, love/heart, and loyalty/crown. ***********
Claddagh mostly known for the design of the Irish heart and hands design actually refers to a small fishing village of Galway in West Ireland. Legends tell of Galway seafarer, Richard Joyce, who was kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave in North Africa where he learned the skill of goldsmithing. When Joyce was released from slavery, he returned to his adored Galway to become a master goldsmith and created the 'Claddagh' ring which has been a popular wedding ring of the Claddagh village for centuries.
The Claddagh design is known for friendship, union, engagement and weddings. A bit of info on the meaning of the symbol when worn as a ring:
When worn on your right hand: Friendship
Worn on your right hand with crown and heart directed at your heart: Heart has not been captured; Not engaged
Worn on your right hand with crown and heart directed out: Love is known and being considered
When worn on third finger of your left hand with heart directing out: Love is known; Heart spoken for and Engagement
When worn on third finger of your left hand with heart directed to your heat: Wedding/Union
