Basic Care of Cactus and Succulents

Light Requirements
Requires 5–6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Filtered sunlight is good too.

Watering
Water thoroughly until water drips out the bottom of the container.
Discard any excess water sitting in the saucer or container.
Water when the soil ball has dried. (Except Orchid Cactus, which prefer to be kept moist.)

Temperature requirements Prefers average indoor temperature between 65–80 degrees

Humidity
Cactus and Succulents require dry environments.

Fertilizer
Feed with water soluble fertilizer at half the recommended rate every other watering during the spring and summer.

Grooming
Use a small brush to clean cacti.
Blow through a straw to dislodge debris caught in the spines.

Repotting
Only needed if rootbound with very little new growth during the growing season.
Use a broad, shallow container and cactus soil.
Repot into a container only slightly larger; they like tight quarters.
Wear leather gloves to protect your hands.
Run a knife around inside rim of pot to loosen cacti and succulents.
Wrap cacti in a band of folded newspaper and hold snuggly with gloved hand to repot.
