How old is the piece?

I am not a jewelry expert but here are some facts so you can make your decision to purchase this piece or any other piece of vintage jewelry.

The German Empire started in 1871 and was Germany until the end of World War II (1949), when it became West or East Germany. In 1990 it became Germany again.

The type of clasp on this piece started in the 1920's and became popularly used when it was machine made in the 1930's. The pin on the fastener sticks out beyond the catch which makes it an older piece as modern brooches do not extend beyond.

By old plastic do you Bakelite or something else? I've seen early plastics in jewelry before 1925 but that's very rare so this had to have been done sometime between 1920 and the end of WW 11, correct?? Very interested in your thoughts on early plastics. Thanks.

As I said,I am not an expert but the marking of Made in Germany certainly is indicative of this time frame.
Old plastics to me are bakelite, catalin, celluloid and even lucite was made in the 1930's.

How often do you come across catalin and do you know how to test for it?
Jul 11th, 2014 at 8:57:20 AM PDT by

You can see thru catalin when held in the light and bakelite is solid.Actually there is more catalin then bakelite but people call it bakelite because they are not familiar with catalin. There are many different tests that can be done, just use google to get the info on all of this.
