The listing, Scrimshaw, and this piece is real and legal! has ended.
There were two pieces done in the 60's purchased for my late mother in 1972 in Resolute Bay, Nunavut, Canada from an Inuit he had become friends with over his many trips there dealing with his company (my dad's company). When his friend presented the two pieces my dad thought he was to choose and his friend shook his head, opened his hand and gave him both. My dad wasn't familiar with scrimshaw and his friend took him into his little work shack and my dad was floored. In there was numerous projects on walrus tusks, whale bones and teeth, a lot of sea life and mammals that this Inuit made some of his living on. He refused payment explaining to my father through a translator that these were his to give to the love of his life because taken proper care of they would last forever as should his love. I have taken pictures of all sides to hopefully show the bone grain as this was done on whale bone. His scrimshaw technique is beautiful. It was placed on a silver plated necklace, no markings, 18" with a 3" extension and lobster claw clasp.
