Preferences for this plant:

Hollyhocks are very hardy plants that do well in zones 2 to 10. They are also drought resistant. Not too many plants do as well as the hollyhock in locations that are extremely hot and dry. The longevity of this plant comes through the number of seeds it frequently sets. An individual plant may only live for two to three years, but the rate in which it reproduces ensures a continuance of hollyhock plants for many years.

oh yes these are one of my fav's just remember when you plant them they need full sunlight and dont plant them under a tree because you should never get water on the leaves and if they sit under a tree and stay wet, then hollyhock rust will set in.. rain water isn't to bad for their leaves just as long as they are not sitting under a constant water drip or anything like that :0) happy planting!!!
