I am sorry for taking so long getting back to you. I do not know what size it would take. I used black string. This was an EX girl friend thing. the stone was all I could find. Sorry

Sorry about not getting back to your question. The only thing I ever used was a black nylon string so she could wear it. I guess it would handle a average size chain. This is the best I can do for you. I'm not real good at sizes like that,I would say about the size of 50 pound test fishing line would fit. In other words I got no idea what I am doing. When it comes to jewelry I have no education. My ex took care of all that stuff.Sorry
