That name issue is a real sore spot for some very good reasons. And it should be explained a bit, if I can try. Forgive me if I don't get it completely right.
"FYROM" is an acronym for "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". In 1991, after Yugoslavia was broken up, The name, flag and symbols of Macedonia became an object of dispute because "The Republic of Macedonia" borders "Greek Macedonia". Parts of these disputes have been resolved, some not.
One problem derives from the United Nations adoption of the provisional name ("the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia") used to describe the country when it was admitted to the UN in 1993. Most members of the UN have accepted and use the name for the country as the "Republic of Macedonia", but Greece has not. Further, Greece blocked (and, I think still has) that country's admittance to NATO, under any other name than that UN provision reference name, "FYROM". This is an open wound for both countries and their citizens because it challenges the hearts of their identities. I sincerely hope that there will be an acceptable solution found, soon, for all concerned.
