I was told from a jeweler (that I did not purchase it from) that the opal was real but the gold was gold filled. which I never understood because why mount real stuff on something not so real. Bought it from an antique dealer that said it was and I thought it was pretty and not too expensive.

is that a crack across the opal i see?

Well it does look like a crack. And I was not going to post it because of that, but, the stone is smooth. the back has cut marks so I think the line or what looks like a crack is from the uneven cut marks on the back side. when you hold it up to the light you can see the cut marks through it.. Not sure if that explains it or not. There is no cut mar marks or uneveness on the front. It is smooth.
