The Ark and the Dove
Two hundred colonists landed March 24, 1634, at St. Clement Island in the mouth of the Potomac River to establish the Maryland colony. The settlers purchased the native village of Yaocomico, which they renamed St. Mary's and used for 60 years as capital of the colony. Lord Baltimore, a Roman Catholic, sought religious freedom for the colony. In 1649, the colonial assembly passed the Act Concerning Religion, the first such statute in the colonies to provide freedom or worship for all Christians. Maryland was a crown colony from 1692 to 1715, with the Church of England as the official religion. The Baltimores regained control of the colony in 1715.
