That's not Templar... that Saint Benedict! The pommel of this key is a charm used in exorcisms and to ward off demons.

You are correct that the side displayed on the first picture is a Benedictine Cross, however the inscription around the cross does not match up with the inscriptions on other medals of St. Benedict. The reverse side, which is shown in the second picture, is completely different from the Seal of St. Benedict which is found on St. Benedict medals and the only resemblance is that both have a standing figure featured in the center. This is clearly not the image of St. Benedict portrayed on Benedictine medals and does not contain the Latin script used for exorcism as the St.Benedict medal does. The cross on the blade is clearly a Templar cross. St. Benedict founded the first Monastery in the 6th century A.D., however there were no Benedictine orders until much later. During the Middle Ages all Monasteries followed the Rule of St. Benedict. Since the Templars were founded as a Monastic order of Warrior Monks, it was only natural for them to use the Benedictine Cross.

Very cool. In the photos I can't see the inscriptions at all.

Thanks!!! I thought the same thing when I first saw it, the similarities are remarkable, but once I compared it side by side with my St.Benedict's Medal the differences were obvious. The Templars were known for combining symbolisms to create their own.
