Washington and Lee University was established in 1749. It has an enrollment of about 1,700, with a library containing about 766,000 volumes. The university is a private, four-year liberal ARTS INSTITUTION at Lexington, VA. Originally for men only, it became coeducational in 1985. Robert E.
