how would you start the plant for the box method?

I had first made a couple of boxes out of plexy glass and metal hinges with purchased from Home Depot. I had found a few patterns online on how to make a box but, now I just use Rubbermaid square boxes with a hole cut out of the lid for the stem. It's a bit harder to find square plastic boxes with lids. RubberMaid makes them and you can usually find them in the bathroom department of Target or Walmart.

It's easy breazy to grow square watermelon. When the melon first begins to grow form, place the stem into the box but be sure to leave it. Don't move it around much. The watermelon will adjust itself in the box. It's most important that the stem gets sunlight so, be sure to use a clear box.

They're very cool to grow. I first saw one in Japan at a restaurant. They wanted $120 US for it. Then I saw another at a Japanese restaurant here in Los Angeles and it was priced at $90. There was four of us in our party and I just had to try it to see its texture and taste it. It was fascinating to see a square watermelon sitting before me and when it was being slices my mind had captured it in slow motion because I was in such awe. Everything about the square watermelon was the same as a traditional round melon.

I grow some every year. I smile each time when I pass a particular vendor at the Farmers Market in Los Angeles. He has one or two on display and sells them for $89 .. and he gets it everytime!

Now the new thing for the Japanese to do is to grow them in shapes as like pyramids, balloons and hearts. If I could find someone to make a mold for me.. I was thinking about trying the shape of a Cadillac or something. Wink.

Give it a try. Just be sure not to disturb the stem or watermelon mutch. Melons don't like to be moved at all. Any sort of container will actually do.. as long as the stem has enough sunlight. Cheers ~LosAngeles
