The genus Iris has about 200 species and is native to the North Temperate regions of the world. The habitat of irises also varies a lot. Some irises grow in deserts, some in swamps, some in the cold far north, and many in temperate climates. Bearded Iris and Siberian Iris are two of the most common types of irises grown.

The seeds come from the pods that form after they have finished blooming. They turn brown and crack open containing seeds.

If you dead head your Iris, you may be removing the seed pod. If you don't and don't collect the seeds, they will self sow themselves and you will notice that your Iris' are getting thicker. Baby Iris shoots look like grass.

Iris seeds will germinate for up to 18 years. That is how they survive in the wild. So, if you want to wait & save some of your seeds for next year or the year after to plant not a problem with IRIS seeds. Make sure to always keep them moist and do not let them dry out, even after planted until they are well established. Every time a seedling blooms for the first time - - it's like Christmas! And really, it is SO exciting. Due to cross pollination from your seeds, other peoples or the bees, each hybrid is unique.

Iris seeds can be planted at any time, but the best time to plant the seeds is during the fall/winter/ and VERY early spring months.
First, soak the seeds in water (using a pudding bowl, cup, or similar) for at least 48 hours up to 2 weeks. Change the water out daily using a strainer to catch the seeds (so as not to lose any). No nicking is necessary. Soaking will cause these shriveled up seeds to plump up as well as to remove the inhibiting factors within the seed so they will germinate more easily. Warmer climates can see "Maiden Blooms" the first spring, cooler climates within 2 years. You should divided your Iris' every 3-5 years to give them room to grow and bloom.

Your soil also makes a difference in the color, whether it is more alkaline or acidic. I have always loved flowers but, after the doctor make me stop working I learned so much about flowers. Still learning everyday.
