Bread is the staff of life. We all know that.

I always thought that was a Bible quote. Actually, it didn't appear until the 16th century, inspired by a Bible verse from Leviticus. Leviticus is a whole book of "thou shalt not"s. This is from Leviticus 26:26:

"And when I have broken the staff of your life, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven."

So apparently the staff of my life isn't bread. Bread's sort of the consolation prize after getting your staff broken.

And I'm not one to nit pick (well, I am, but that's irrelevant) but I know that too many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the broth. So ten women trying to bake bread in one oven is going to mean some sucky bread.
