Though Tom and Sophia are in love, her father is determinded that she will marry Blifil, Allworthy's heir. Only too happy to help this plan along. Blifil devid=ses a scheme that leads Allworthy to disown his rival. Cast out from his home and family, Tom seeks comfort in a stranger's arms at a highway tavern. Unfortunately, Sophia is there as well, and she finds out about his indescretion. Convinced that Tom no longer loves her, Sophia flees for London, but Tom finds out and follows her.
