Royal Poinciana (aka Flamboyant Tree)

Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) is a large spreading tree that grows to about 40 feet tall and can spread up to 60 feet wide. It is an excellent shade tree and is well known in Florida for its prolific display of reddish-orange blossoms that cover the top of the tree in the late spring and early summer.

A spectacular spring bloomer (May-June, maybe July) and consistently voted among the top 5 most beautiful flowering trees in the world, the Royal Poinciana deserves its support. It may be the most colorful flowering tree as well.

Royal Poinciana is deciduous in winter allowing sun to penetrate I thrives on full sun exposure. In early summer, the voluminous red blooms appear and will hold for 4-8 weeks.

Cutting off sprinkler water in the winter & early spring prior to blooming promotes a far better flowering display. Irrigating at these times may even stop all flowers from forming. The older the tree, the more intensely it will bloom

The Poinciana is rated to a tall 40 feet. In hot months the fine loose leaves provide a wonderful "broken" shade beneath well suited for any plantings that enjoy shifting light and protection from the hot summer sun.

Young, it tends to grow as wide as tall causing an appearance that it will invade the air space of driveways, roofs and garages. As it matures, it picks up its drooping branches to create a high umbrella.

Royal Poinciana is tolerant of some salt drift, not too fussy as to soil and has no pests. Does not like freezes and is tolerant to about 45.

1 - boil water & take it off the stove
2- put the seeds in the boiling water
4- In a few minutes add cold water until the the water feels very hot but not burning
5- leave the seeds in the water overnight

Some people snip off the very end of these seeds to hasten germination. It is a fast grower, but does not mature till it between 6 and 10 years old.

If you'll see my above response to amandahenry, it could possibly survive if in a protected, warm-ish area, otherwise, people have had success growing them as bonsai.
