is this only for newborns? (my son has started biting and he's a year old)

The package says newborn, which is the standard size - 24mm. I've researched reviews on this and they say the newborn standard size is actually better if used with an older baby. They also make a smaller size (16mm, which they say works best for a newborn. SO... I believe this would work just fine for you and your son :)
