Description

The listing, antique, very rare, native American ceramonial war staff. has ended.

up for auction here is a native American ceremonial war staff. it is well over 130 years old and in beautiful condition. it is made of wood, leather and hawk feathers. it has a clear crystal at the tip, 2 large hawk feathers hung by leather string and like wise 4 small feathers. it is hollow with i am guessing small pebbles inside for shaking to make the crunching noise. it is possibly in origin either apache, sue, cree, or cheyenne. not really sure. this is a very rare item and from what i have heard very collectable. please no low bids on this item.
and no free shipping. it has to be specially packaged for careful transport. shipping price will be determined on where and distance of shipping, due to this being a very fragile item.

thanks and merry bidding.

added description, the shaft is encased in bear fur with a small handle grip at the opposite end from the crystal.
Questions & Comments

If they are turkey feathers, and it is more recently made, why don't you add an update to your auction for people who may not read the comments? I'm sure you wouldn't want to *purposely* lead people into believing this is something it isn't, right?

and whats with the madness from dakotaohoyo? for one every bird is seen as "eagle" in native and two natives have "bald and golden" feathers and are not held or fined

it seems there is ignorance in every culture. especially the moronic complainers. also i would estimate $12.99 considering the weight and packaging involved.

This doesn't even take a trained eye too see this is not authentic, rather recently made.

Also I find it odd and I'm sure you're going to hide my comments as well, but I don't think they dyed leather purple 130 yrs ago ... This is a very strange "staff "

Very nice find, very rare to find a female made staff, crystal says its more likely medicinal staff,or women often made family staffs,2 lg feathers for parents and we add small feathers for each child, bear fur often means for protection, crystal for family well being.war staff should have red in it,but never a healing crystal for war staff.Very nice find thought.

OK, lively discussion, lol, looks like we lost the Wa! Wa! gals, so just us leftovers to talk 'turkey', lol! Looks to be, what, about 18"? I don't have any objection to it being a fairly current artifact, I collect Native American artifacts without a lot of distinctions...don't have to be old, or from a particular tribe, or a particular type of artifact, I'm satisfied as long as the object was manufactured by a native American. I buy a lot of things that I know to be current, but the fact is that darned few people would be able to own Indian work if it was just stuff from the past! The traditions are being carried forward by dedicated folk who don't want to see them lost, and I'm fine with conspiring with them by aquiring as many as I can lay my hands on, lol! As for the staff, Hawk or Turkey feathers are fine, considering most feathers used were Turkey feathers anyway...it was a matter of a warriors quest to acquire an Eagle feather, they don't just leave 'em layin' around all over the place! The rest of the staff sounds like a couple of other rattle staffs I've run into before, though, I'll have to admit that I've never run into one that was dyed Purple, lol, though I'm certain some were, it's a popular color, after all! OK, so...I want, and plan to bid on the staff, and yes, Raymond, I'll outbid you when I do, lol, BUT, I really need to know how badly you're gonna hit me up for s&h. I'm on disabiliry, and thusly a VERY limited income, so what will be postage from your location in Ohio, to mine in the Austin, Texas area, Zip- 78662? I'm gonna go ahead and bid, but I'd appreciate the info before auction ends, and if it's steep, I may require a few days to scrape it together. Thanks for a wicked cool listing, I'd Fan you, but I did that long ago, lol!

you were close on the length. but, actually you were off for it is 3 inches shorter and yes the color threw me off also. usually they were of a brown or tan leather. the fur i am assuming is rabbit, because it is very soft. if it were bear it would have come from a cub. that is a possibility.. as far as shipping, i am going to make concessions on this item by doing flat rate shipping instead of exact. i was going to change it to free ship but cannot because it has to be wrapped carefully. the flat rate chg. will be $12.99 anywhere us and $21.99 to canada and elsewhere. by the way the wood sound chamber could be hickory, because of the sound resonance. the large feathers are turkey and the small down feathers are either turkey or quail. thank you all for your bids and consideration.

what is the wood?

not sure, but making a guess probably hickory, elm, ash, or walnut. smelled no hint of cedar and soft woods would not hold up.
