I live in 8b and for the most part they are an annual. Some times they drop seeds and one will come up from seed but not often. They produce a lot of seeds. I always keep one in a container that comes in for the winter but that is just so I have blooms earlier.

How do they do in the shade or do they have to have sun

They like morning sun better then the hot afternoon. All of mine are in partial sun none get sun after 2:00pm I know someone who's plants get sun all day long but they don't bloom. I don't know if it's to much sun, not enough fertilizer or water but hers don't bloom much at all.
