Salvation Army
An international Christian evangelical organization founded in London in 1865, the Salvation Army was started by William Booth. As a religious movement engaged in social services, the army has made a goal of approaching sociological problems with Christian concern. The Salvation Army is operated on a military basis. Ministers are officers with military rank; parishioners are soldiers; the main center of worship is the corps; the Articles of War is signed as a declaration of faith by enrolling Salvationists. Salvation Army assistance is provided without regard to age, condition, creed, race, or sex. Among its many programs are correctional services for prisoners and parolees, day care, senior citizen clubs and residences, summer camps, emergency and disaster services, missing persons bureaus, rehabilitation for alcoholism and drug abuse, family counseling, and visitation to institutionalized persons.
