Victor Herbert
Victor Herbert was a cellist and composer whose operettas continue to be popular. His songs have becomes classics. He came to the United States from Ireland in 1886 to take a position with the Metropolitan Opera as a cellist. He conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904. His best-remembered operettas are Babes in Toyland, The Red Mill, and Naughty Marietta. Among his most-remembered songs are Gypsy Love Song and Ah Sweet Mystery of Life. He also wrote two operas.
