Augustus Saint-Gaudens
A portrait sculptor of the late 19th century, Augustus Saint-Gaudens was apprenticed as a cameo cutter at the age of 13. His first piece of renown was that of Adm. David Farragut, a bronze in New York City's Madison Square Park. It shows Farragut standing, braced as if on a ship's deck. Further, the sculpture is integrated with the marble base. Saint-Gaudens also produced a portrait of Abraham Lincoln for Chicago's Lincoln Park. A portrait monument of Gen. William T. Sherman on horseback is in New York City's Central Park, Saint-Gauden's contribution to the equestrian monument tradition.
