Description

The listing, 10 Muscadine Seeds has ended.

I have 10 Muscadine seeds taken from the fruit of a wild vine grown here in Mississippi. The pictures show the vine, fruit and seeds. The ones I found were growing singly on the vine. If properly cultivated and fertilized, the fruit can be found growing in bunches like grapes. They are delicious eaten straight from the vine (squeezed out of the thick skin) or made into jelly.

"Muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia) is a grapevine species native to the south of North America that has been extensively cultivated since the 16th century. Its natural range is recognized in the following states of the US: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.[1] The plants are well adapted to their native warm and humid climate; they need fewer chilling hours than better known varieties and they thrive on summer heat.

Muscadine berries range from bronze to dark purple to black in color when ripe.[2] However, many wild varieties stay green through maturity. They have skin sufficiently tough that eating the raw fruit often involves biting a small hole in the skin to suck out the pulp inside. Muscadines are not only eaten fresh, but also are used in making wine, juice, and jelly".......................................
"In a natural setting, muscadines are important plants for improving wildlife habitat by providing cover, browse, and fruit for a wide variety of animals.[4]"

have you planted seed from these vines yourself? what is the germination rate ? would you be willing to do cuttings after the vines have lost their leaves ( assuming that like other grapes I have started that way, that one can start them this way, cuttings buried over the winter to root) thanks

No, I haven't planted any of these seeds. I would have to Google it to see the germination rate. Since they grow wild here, I would think they are easy to germinate. I don't know how to do the cuttings. These seeds came from a wild vine down the road from where I live.

just wait till they have dropped all their leaves and cut lengths of vine, I cut just below a leaf scar, cause that is where the roots or new buds will develop , I made them about a foot long and planted them in a good potting soil, and kept them damp, I had 95% of the pieces grow roots, did not seem to matter if I used a rooting hormone or not. :) I took cuttings from a friends vineyard in CA, wrapped them in a damp bag for the 3 day drive home, planted them the day after I got home. I hot grapes off of one of the vines this year- 3 years after planting in a pot :)

I believe they are Thompson's, they are a sweet green seedless variety used for table grapes, I also have Catawba, a heritage seeded red, and an unseeded red I got from a neighbor :)
