Description

The listing, Numismatic Coin; Mexico; 1 Peso (10% silver); 1959; circulated has ended.

Thank you for browsing.

This, in my humble opinion, is a cool all round coin. It utilizes one of my favourite processes - edge letting; it’s older than 50 years - turning 65 this year; it’s chunky - to allow for the edge lettering, this coin has a thickness of 2.3mm; despite what how some have tried to mislead people otherwise it has a 10% silver content and it’s from Mexico - which has a great history involving silver.

The winner of this auction will receive: one (1) 1959 Mexican 1 Peso (10%) silver coin with edge lettering (“INDEPENDECIA Y LIBERTAD”) in circulated condition. This coin has 10% silver content; diameter of 35.0 mm; thickness of 2.3mm; total weight of 16.0 grams and mintage of 27,369 000.

PLEASE NOTE - This coin is in circulated condition. You will receive the exact coin shown in the photographs and, as is evident, there is some discolouration and circulation wear. Coin easel NOT included.

I have bought a decent amount of these lately, and have read that the 10% silver content was mostly silver plating on the outside of the coin, and all of the composition of the inner alloys of the coin contained virtually no silver, is this true? The reason i ask is most of the outside silver on your coin looks to be worn away, so I wanted to ask before i considered bidding or not for sure.

Thank you for your comment and excellent question. :-)

Though I am not familiar with your information - and I did more searching just now, to no avail - I don't know how accurate it would be. The reason I say this is that, though there appears to be a plating (possibly silver) that is quite evidently worn on this coin - due to it's well circulated condition - it is a very thin plating...much like you would see on a gold-plated or gilded coin. In the case of those coins, the gold content is so negligible as to not warrant mention (by weight) in the technical specifications for the coin. I would also suspect that, if the majority of the silver content were in the outer 'plating' it would be mentioned in several different sources - I could find none.

Please note - this is my opinion based (mainly) on my research into this coin; I do not claim to be an expert, only as informed as I can be, and welcome these kinds of inquiries - as they only make us all better informed.

I hope this helps and thank you, again. :-)

Thank you for the great question. I'm positive there are others who wonder the same thing...and their question has now been answered. Correctly, I hope.

Thank you for browsing and your kind words. I'm just a little (LOL) obsessive when it comes to the presentation. ;-)

I don't know how to say this politely, but that coin is worthless.

My grandfather has a drawer full of them. He's a former coin collector and pressed for cash, so I know he would have sold them off by now if he could. They don't have sentimental value, because we aren't Latino and besides cruises he hasn't been to Mexico. He sold all of his .999 coins. To be of real value, coins are either nearly pure precious metal or minted before World War 2.

Thank you for the clarification. I wasn't sure if you knew something that I didn't or, as is the case, it was based on a personal opinion.

You can hide all of my comments. I apologize for putting this on your page, but this isn't opinion. Take it to a coin dealer and you can get what I told you verified.

These coins are not worthless just have little value unless in uncirculated condition. You can sell them all day for a $1.50. Its not much but a lot more than face value

They are not plated either yes the silver I'd on the outside of a cupro- nickel core but its a total different process than plating
