Commemorative issue
Panama Canal 25th anniversary
Theodore Roosevelt, Gen Goethals, Gaillard Cut
With portraits of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt and the man he appointed chief engineer of the Panama Canal project, Gen. George W. Goethals, this stamp was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the canal. The canal is 40 miles from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans, from deep water to deep water. Maximum width is 300 feet, and the minimum depth is 41 feet. There are six pairs of locks, with concrete chambers 1,000 feet long by 110 feet wide. Although a commercial success from the time of its opening, it is unable to accommodate modern bulk tankers and super tankers. Work began in 1991 to widen the Gaillard Cut to permit ocean-going vessels to pass en route.

Original Gum (OG) - a stamp that still retains the adhesive applied when the stamp was made, yet has been hinged or has had some of gum removed.
