I agree with researchgirl, your auction got me looking at my canning books again and wanting to put something up. It is really a lost art, which is a shame. I remember when I was a kid and my grandma still had a garden, she had a whole wall of canned goods down in the basement. I thought that was the coolest thing, and I still do. One of these days, I'm going to have a wall like that, lol. If anyone is interested, there is a great canning blog, with a lot of recipes at, http://www.sbcanning.com/. She has other links to canning sites that I haven't checked out yet. Hope this auction does really well for you fairytailjen!

everything she canned. Her applesauce was amazing. The credits don't matter as much as getting people back into this.

Just gotta jump in here even though I don't have the credits to bid. If you buy used canning jars, be very careful to check the mouth for any chips or nicks, even tiny ones will prevent sealing. Peaches do not have to be canned in syrup, you can use water and a little lemon juice (like a teaspoon to a quart) if you don't use or want sugar. Tomatoes in the US are generally too low in acid now days to be safe in a water bath caner either add lemon juice or pressure can them. It is possible to home can in metal cans, but that equipment is very expensive. A good pressure caner is about 60-100 dollars. You can water bath can in any pan large enough to hold your jars and enough water to actually cover the jars. Please be sure to always use new lids for your jars. The rings can be reused but lids must be new. I think all states have agricultural extension offices and they also have lots of information on canning and preserving food. Some even offer classes. Canning is hot work, but well worth the effort. Just don't be intimidated and follow instructions carefully until you have experience. Before babies, I used to can 3 bushels of tomatoes, a bushel of green beans, and a bushel each of peaches and home made apple sauce every year in addition to all my freezing. I am thinking this might finally be the year I get back to it. Good luck all you new caners!

You can even find used canning jars @ Goodwill, or other thrift shops.
I've never heard of no cool jam. Is it a new term for freezer jam? Nice auction!!

Great to see someone will get the produce gift card and the canning surprise. I have enjoyed this so much because I have met so many new people who are all going to be in the kitchen canning fresh summer fruits and Veggies. My next project is Salsa. What's your canning project going to be?

I hosted a Ball canning party last weekend. I didn't have anything left over and I would never give away my portion of what they sent.. I absolutely love it too much!!!
I don't think there is anything wrong with putting the extra on here though, you are still not charging any money for it, so I don't think its wrong. If anyone is interested in canning, this is a wonderful set. The book is AMAZING and I am learning so much from it!
Happy canning everyone!!

Thanks, I had decided to do canning this year and my kids bought me a bunch of items that were the same including the book. I had 5 moms and 7 girls so I gave them loaded gift bags. I then thought this would be a great place to get the product out there as well as meet some great people who are interested in the lost art of canning. The comments have been awesome and I have learned so much. We all had do much fun that I am looking forward to doing more with my daughter. Thanks for the support and enjoy the canning and come back and read the comments. Jen

salsa also:) ... mixed berry jam ... maple pumpkin butter ... hopefully pear butter ...&... tomato sauce

I have to say~ what a NEAT idea for a Listia auction!!! =D

And for those of you that have not canned yet~
once you do, & you "can" a few things... & get some practice under your belt of how things work, you will see that it's really not hard at all & you will be hooked!
And you will want to can EVERYTHING!!! LOL:)

And you will be making-up your own yummy canning recipes! =)

Good to see people are still enjoying it!!! :) ... ~ Annette

Nice auction! My husband in I started canning around a few years ago. He is realy good at canning peppers. It seems every one loves them. I would become a fan but for some reason I'm at my limit at 1000. I'll be watching this, these are very useful items. :o)

I use a big black lobster pot bought at a yard sale. Those are easy to come by here in Maine. I fill it up and use the water over and over. Of course if I make a lobster then I have to clean it out for the next canning batch.

I love Maine. I would love to get a old wood lobster trap and do some art stuff with it. I was there on a cruise ship and could not bring one back. Such a pretty state.

Someone sent me a email because this is from House Party and it is to be given away. The items listed are all the items I was to keep for myself. I did not need them because I had already gotten supplies before I got the box. It is to get people interested in canning so I felt this would be a great place to share it. I did email the company with my intentions. I wanted this to be addressed so there are not any issues. Thanks

Thank you for all your wonderful advice. I did this years ago with my mom and decided to try it with my daughter. I'm using a stock pot to cook my jars. Great tip on the used jars. Thank you.

Check this out, http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/how/can_home.html it is The National Center for Home Food Preservation, it should answer a lot of your questions. Jamming is making jam out of friut and pickling is to pickle things with vinager and salt like cukes, cauliflower, beets, watermelon rinds...ect. Hope this helps, also, check out your local library, they should have a few canning books to help.

Awesome auction! I really wish more people would but up some canning books, lol. I do have the ball book that is included and it is good! Taintedstrawberries, the piece of equipment that you are refering to is a pressure canner, I need one too, but I can still can tomatoes, jams, jellies, pickles or anything with a higher acid content without one. The pressure canner is for canning most veggies and meat or broth. I'm fanning you Fairytailjen, I've never heard of a House Party Ball Canning party, very interesting!

The jam we made used the easy pectin that is included in the auction. I did not have to cook them. Like the freezer jam you mentioned. It is very good and we picked fresh berries in the am so fresh and sweet. The cookbook also has recipes for fruit leathers and dried fruit. I'm making sweet potato treats for my dogs in the dehydrator. They love the treats but the cost so much in the pet store I made my own!
