Description

The listing, GENUINE Ancient Roman Coin With CAMPGATE Back! 337-361 AD has ended.

This is a GENUINE Ancient Roman coin dating to 337-361 AD, made during the reign of Constantius II. It features the classic Campgate design on back, a must-have for any Roman coin collection! The Campgate design was used on coins during a surge of Roman military patriotism, after many years of attacks on Rome by barbaric armies. It was used on coins to signify to Roman citizens that they were safe and protected. See photos for condition. Dime shown for size comparison only. Check out my other auctions! Shipping in the US is FREE, US bidders ONLY, must have verified address. All Listia rules apply. Thanks for looking!

Since it's "genuine",does it come with a C.O.A.?

I have collected ancient coins and artifacts for over 30 years, and I have personally authenticated and attributed this coin. If you need a "CoA", make a copy of my auction ad, as it has all information necessary to the coin. If you want further certification, send it to a reputable certification & grading service and pay to get it slabbed.

Hey alltherage, nice coin! From the picture I'm thinking this is Constantine II as Caesar. It's hard to see the important letters at the end of his name, but it appears to have the IUN (Junior) in the obverse legend. The reverse legend is PROVIDEN TIAECAESS, again making it Caesar, whether Constantine II or Constantius. That puts the coin at 324-329 AD.

Hi stamphound! The obverse legend was very hard for me to decipher, I wasn't sure if I was seeing IVN or IVL, so I decided to err on the side of caution and attribute it to Constantius II because it matches a Constantius II campgate that I have almost exactly. Some people are real whizzes at reading blurred Latin, and I'm not one of them. I looked at it again and I think you're probably right, which makes the coin a few years older than I thought. The whole Contantine, Constantius, Constans era always gives me a headache, lol! Thanks for the sharp eye!

Alltherage, I use http://www.tesorillo.com/aes/_rev/index1i.htm that lets you use the reverse image and gives you all the Emperors that have that reverse (even better if you have the reverse legend). Plus it gives all the possible Obverse legends and where the breaks are, matching those to the Mint too. Sometimes you can attribute the entire coin with only a few letters showing.

That's a great resource, thanks for sharing it. Looks a lot faster and easier than wading through www.wildwinds.com

Wildwinds is really good once you figure out the Emperor and the mint mark. Unfortunately, tesorillo only goes back to 317. (nice resources to give to your winning bidder).

Outstanding info thanks to you both. I've been an avid collector for 50 years but I'm still a neophyte when it comes to Ancients. Bookmarked and appreciated.
