The Red Poppy is known by many different names: Red Corn Poppy, Red American Legion Poppy and Flanders Poppy. Each one of these names refers to the same flower. The name ‘Flanders Poppy’ refers to the aftermath of a famous WWI battle on Flanders Field where these poppies grew into abundance. This flower is also used in many countries as a symbol of remembrance for the casualties of wars fought throughout the 20th Century. An interesting tidbit – in order to enjoy the poppy as a cut flower the ends need to be either boiled in water or burned with a match, in order to curtail their naturally swift wilting pace.
