Description

The listing, Swiss (Confoederatio Helvetica) 20 franc coin, 1965 has ended.

This is a 20 franc coin from Switzerland (Confoederatio Helvetica) from 1965.

The front bears an image of Helvetia, the personification of Switzerland (like Uncle Sam in the US) wearing a crown, with the words "CONFÅ’DERATIO HELVETICA" (Latin for the "Swiss Confederation") above and the date blow. The back has the number "20" within a heavy wreath.

It was retired from legal tender status as of January 1, 2004 and was removed from circulation.

Someone wrote to tell me this is a rappen, not a franc. That certainly could be true . . . I am not a coin expert!

The only 20 Franc coin is the "Vreneli", which is a gold coin! Otherwise, as far as circulating coinage goes, 5 Francs is the largest (and it's about the size of a US 1/2 dollar piece).

Thank you for the education!
I know the 5 franc piece you mention . . . I've got quite a few of them. Years ago, I spent some time in Switzerland and I thought they were so beautiful.

I've still got several left from my last trip. Amazing that the 5 Franc coin is now worth a whopping US $5.50 ! Unless they're fairly old (pre-1965 and have silver content), they're usually just spending money...

Now I'm curious! Some of those gorgeous coins are from a summer I spent in Geneva in 1966. So now I've got to look at the bunch I have and see if any are pre-1965. . . maybe enough to buy lunch! I wish I knew if the ton of coins I've got from my travels during the '60s and '70s are worth more than pocket change - if they have collector value, since they're no longer issued because the euro was adopted.

Correction! I checked the Krause catalog. Switzerland switched to copper/nickel coins in 1968, so silver coins are available through 1967 for the 1/2 franc, 1 franc, 2 franc and 5 franc coins.

Thanks for the updated information! Now I really DO have to take some time & go through my Swiss coins, especially the 5 franc ones.
