Alongside sci-fi "four X" titles such as Master of Orion and Space Empires, the Galactic Civilizations series has been "eXpanding" since the mid-'90s. Players seek to create the galaxy's most powerful empire, among dozens of competing civilizations, by developing and applying economic growth, technological advance, military strength, and diplomatic prowess.

Beginning with a homemade shareware version of the game, the Galactic Civilizations series has evolved over the years, and this 2006 edition boasts all of the refinement and sophistication accrued throughout this history.
