I would say about 12"+ from where it is attached at top of handbag to top where it would rest on your shoulder. I am not sure what it is made of. It's much thicker than a ribbon would be, but looks like ribbon. Haha! I am not a crafty sort of person, so I couldn't honestly tell you. I bought it at a Specialty Shop in Eureka Springs, AR last Spring. It's just adorable!
