Questions & Comments
Thank you so much. Glad to know that you have done your home work and know what you are talking about with the test. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't some kid that took these out of there moms jewelry box and put on listia. Fanned and bidding. One Thing I'm not sure Bakelite is more valuable then ivory I could be wrong on that since it has been a while since my antiqueing days.
tried some tests with it - this one worked well Smell the place where you touched the item with the hot pin. If the item is ivory, it should have no scent that wasn't there before. If it's bone, it will smell faintly of burning hair. •True ivory will not get damaged by this experiment, since it is hard and strong enough to resist the heat. However, if the object you're testing happens to be made of plastic, the hot needle will make a slight dent. Since some plastics (such as Bakelite) have as much or more value than ivory, you may not want to try the hot needle test until you know for sure that what you have is not plastic. Also, beads are very smooth, and definitely not bakelite or plastic. they are vintage... belonged to my Mom back in the 50's when she got them, she had quite a few ivory pieces. They are over 50 years old so have a slight brownish hue.
