Description

The listing, A Woman of Jerusalem: A Biblical Novel by Elsie Mack has ended.

I am offering a used, hardback copy of 'A Woman of Jerusalem: A Biblical Novel' by Elsie Mack. This fictional novel was published in 1962 by Doubleday & Co., New York, NY. There is no ISBN number. The dust jacket is showing some minor shelf wear with a 2-inch tear on the back of the cover. There is some yellowing to the book edges, but overall the novel is in really good condition. The inside reads well with no highlights or markings. This is a true classic and difficult to find, even on Amazon.

As read from the inside of the dust cover: "Most people believe that the well-known New Testament story of the forgiven adulteress referred to Mary Magdalene. Actually, she was never named in the sole account of the episode. In this novel, a re-creation of the story behind the Biblical passage, she is called Tamar and portrayed as an aristocratic Jewess who broke the codes of her family and her religion by falling in love with a Roman officer. Felix, the Roman, was equally torn by opposing loyalties: by Pontius Pilate's order, he was forced to plot secretly against Tamar's people. In superbly vivid detail, 'A Woman of Jerusalem' captures the atmosphere of Jerusalem as it seethed with hostility and intrigue, for Romans and Jews were locked in bitter enmity; Jews were divided among themselves; and slavery added its note of vengeful violence, while setting sparks everywhere was the inflammatory message of love and forgiveness preached by a stranger whom some called the Messiah. A compelling and romantic story weaves together these facets as Tamar and Felix struggle with their wayward passion; as Tamar's betrothed adheres too strictly to the letter of the law; as Simeon, her brother, forsakes the law to lust after pagan Salome; as a slave girl's resentment results in betrayal of her mistress; and as suspicion of the strange preacher spreads threateningly.... 'A Woman of Jerusalem' is appropriately rich in compassion, drama, and meaning as it unfolds this memorable story behind an immortal message of mercy.
