Questions & Comments
AdikaviDasa you are incorrect. First the Monitor and Merrimack were not submarines but rather the first Ironclads. Neither vessel was sunk ;the battle was a draw. The Monitor could possible have won but the designer John Ericson did not want to risk using full charges in the Dahlgren guns and thus were unable to penetrate the Merrimack's sides. The Captain of the Monitor was injured when the pilot house took a direct hit, he was temporarily blinded and his face blacked by powder burns. The Monitor sunk off Cape Hatteras in a Storm and not in battle.
During the civil war the merrimack and the monitor were the first two submarines that ever fought in a war. One was the South's and one the North's. Both were sunk in the battle and everyone died as far as I remember from high school. After that they gave up on Submarines for a while. So I would guess the spoon was made in commemoration of that event and not on the day of the actual battle.
It would be good to know what year it was made. I have a book on the Monitor that was printed 50 years after the battle of Hampton Rhodes in 912 from the library of a decommissioned Navy Hospital ship the "USS Mercey"
I wonder if this was a one off by some artist that they etched into a silver spoon simular to love tokens people made from silver coins rather than an official commemorative spoon?
