Description

The listing, Rare hard to find commemorative coin has ended.

This is a Christopher Columbus souvenir world Columbia expedition Chicago USA 1892-1893 coin. Not if you ask me what year the coin really is or how old it is I'm really not sure I haven't been able to find any information on the coin. In fact I have not ever found another duplicate of this coin on the Internet. 2 inches wide. So yes this is a big coin. It is not silver but it feels something of a semi heavy but not too heavy metal. It does look like it was a struck. But I cannot find any mold marks on it so in my opinion it is a struck coin. If the bid goes over 2000 I will throw in a Republica del Ecuador coin 50 sucres 1991.

But just the same this coin does not have a lot of information on the Internet. Or at least none that I found. I would figure it to be more common due to the fact that was a fair thing.

Back in 1892, at the Esposizione Italo-Americana (Italian-American Exposition) at Genoa, Italy, a large Cristoforo Columbo medal of nearly identical design was issued by Mayer & Wilhelm of Stuttgart, Germany. Measuring 90mm, it was struck in bronze and also in aluminum, which was considered the new "wonder metal" at that time. Later, they modified it to create a smaller, 50mm medal with English inscriptions for the World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago World's Fair) held in 1892-93. On the reverse, the arms of the City of Genoa were replaced by an American eagle, and the two women point at a sunrise over the exposition grounds, instead of at Columbus's three ships as on the original medal. This version, too, was struck in both bronze and aluminum, as well as in a white-metal alloy.
