Is it silver or nickel?
Mar 23rd, 2010 at 10:37:00 AM PDT by

I really don't know very much about coins.. I am just not sure whether the 1866 3 cent was nickel or silver.. I think the mint started with siliver, not sure when it switched to nickel. I am not a coin collector. Hope that helps.

This is nickel, 4,801,000 were minted in Philadelphia and are worth anywhere from 16$ to 60$ depending on the condition. I would say this coin is in very good to fine condition.

Wow.. cool.. thanks. I didn't know the lowest amount that it could be worth was 16.00. Pretty good... I may have hung onto it if I had known that.. esp. that it could be worth $60.00 I did know that a bit more than 4 million were made.. thats not very many when you consider how many current pennies are made..lol.. probably billions. Anyway.. I bet there are too many in this good of shape.. so maybe it is worth closer to the $60.00 range. Thanks for the comment. Good luck bidding.

lol.. I meant to say that there are probably NOT very many 3 cent coins this old, in this good of shape!..lol. Also, I didn't know that the condition is GOOD to FINE!! So thank you very much for your input. I guess it would be graded HIGHER than what I thought.

I AGREE!!! I think that it is amazing that it is in such good shape. You can very easily read the date and all! Thanks for looking.

hardly grade it "good shape" IMO but, it is around vg 4-8 i don't see these often enough to be able to grade off hand. The ear is completely erased off the coin and the liberty is not readable so i am thinking vg 4 or 6. Somewhere inbetween. it is not a key date i'd have to say the value would be around 18$ retail my bid is accordingly. If it were not cleaned, which IMO again it is. The presence of a shiny surface on a low grade coin is a dead give away. Also deep black marks around the edging of letters and detail marks indicates an untrained and most likely harsh cleaning.

Thanks for your input. I don't know much about coins.. I don't collect them. I did check out ebay before I listed this 3 cent coin.. and they go for about $20.00 plus $2.00 to $5.99 shipping. I thought it was really neat because it is so old. Also, lots of old coins that I see listed on other sites, tend to have the date almost completely worn off, whereas with this one.. the date is very readable. Perhaps to an avid collector, this coin may be worth $18.00 or so.. but to someone who likes really old stuff.... and who has listia credits.. this is a way to get one without having to pay cash for it. Also, it would make a very nice gift for someone who collects coins!! Again, thank you for your input.

never said it wasn't a good coin. The mintage back then were in the millions and many were completely destroyed or melted after they reached basil state. Market value is only good for a problem free coin. I find that this coin has toning problems. However older circulated coins are rarely found uncleaned in some form. Years ago cleaned coins were worth more so be almost all unslabbed coins were cleaned.
The judging is what degree they were cleaned and how obvious it is, for that it just takes time to see. I still get it from time to time. (some times it costs me a lot of money)
in your grade of coin the auctions went from 13-20$

i gotta start saving these posting i make for future reference for people lol

I appreciate your input.. really. I didn't mean to imply that you thought it wasn't a good coin.. I figured you DID think it was a good coin.... that's why I thanked you for your comments. Although I don't collect coins.. I do that the value of a coin is affected slightly if it has been cleaned. I have seen a few cleaned coins, and to me.. this one does not look cleaned at all, but again, I am not a collector nor a professional in this area. And yes, by all means save your postings and post on all the coin auctions because it is very helpful to people. Thank you again for taking the time to look, consider and comment on my auction!
