Description

The listing, Hoya carnosa (Wax plant or Porcelain Flower) 5 well-rooted starts has ended.

Hoya is an easily grown, long-lived houseplant. They are wonderful for hanging baskets and may also be trained to a trellis or other small framework.

They like bright, indirect light year-round. They can be grown outside, but are tropical plants and winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-12. I like to have mine in a hanging basket that goes outside in the summer to hang out of direct sun but get bright light and then inside for the cooler weather. The flowers are intricately detailed and shiny. They are so unique and perfect that people are surprised they're real.

Most of the photos are ones I found on the internet because I didn't have many of my own when it was blooming. But the last two photos of it flowering over a wall clock are from my plant. I repotted mine and took several cuttings to root this summer and it has not begun flowering again yet but I had taken just a couple photos of it when it was...

You will receive 5 well-rooted starts that are ready to be planted along with an info sheet on the plant. With enough light, they grow quickly and can get large. Cuttings root easily if you want to make more plants of your own. They really are one of the more perfect houseplants because they require very minimal care and once they get settled in, they are gorgeous when they bloom.

Just added two more photos. The last two now are the actual rooted cuttings that are being auctioned. There are 10 pieces shown and this auction is for 5 of these. As you can see they are very healthy and very well-rooted. All you need to do is pot them!

Just a thought. Are your leaves a rather darker green with somewhat silver spots on them? It looks that way in the photo with your left hand in it. If that is true then your plant is Hoya Carnosa "Silver Queen". And yes from leaves to flowers she is very beautiful!!!!!

That is probably what she is then. The leaves do get dark and shiny with light spots. It's also cool how thick the leaves are - like smooth leather.

Gardengrower, I just was thinking that it might be too cold up here for it to flower. It's growing really good but has never flowered! I'm going to put it out in the late spring, I think maybe that will help it flower, I hope! Lol thank you

I have this plant! I never knew the name, same flowers...I got mine as a "daughter" cutting. I saw the flowers and knew right away. I live in NE. WA and we leave our plants outside from about May to August. Thanks for sharing this. They are nice, hardy plants.

My mom puts hers outside on the porch where it gets bright, indirect light all spring and summer and it grows really fast and beautiful. Mine is in a bright window inside, but doesn't get enough sun to grow as fast. I am working on a plan to get mine in a good place outside next spring once it's warm enough. Those flowers are incredible, aren't they?!!

During the winter their growing slows and you do need to water less and they can take cooler temps. They are tropical plants and I wouldn't want to keep them cooler than 50°F. But during the growing season, give them LOTS of bright, indirect light during the days. They'll live in low light but not bloom. I think they prefer 65-75°F, but as I said in the winter they're okay with cooler. Another thing - once they start to bud, don't move or rotate the pot. They do not like to be messed with while they are blooming. And, while you can take cuttings to make more plants, never prune off the leafless stem (spur) where flowers were produced before because new blooms form on the same knobby spurs year after year. It can take a couple years to get it to bloom. It needs to become slightly root-bound and settled in it's place before it wants to bloom.

Yeah, hang under a porch or from under a tree where it'll get lots of light but not get burned by direct sun. It can take some morning sun but just keep it out of the direct sun in the afternoon.

memarodriguez, it isn't too cold. My friend has one in her spare room that she doesn't heat in the winter (we are in s'east Mi, veeeerrryyy cold.) Her temp probably just stays about 45F. If she has something to do in there or company she will leave the door open and make a little fire in her fireplace for heat. She also has cyclamen, african violets, lg angel wing begonia, christmas cactus, geranium and of course HOYA. They all do beautifully in their state of hibernation.

She does water but of course they don't require much during this time. And thru watching her plants I have learned that cooler can be better!

Hope this information helps you a little! Oops forgot to say,,,,hers blooms all the time!!!!

That's impressive. But ya know plants can put up with a lot of things that's not normally in their range. As long as you are meeting their other needs, they can put up with a little more cold than they like...plus some folks just have a way with plants that's nearly magic!

Boy, ill say! Some people do have a magic touch with plants. We moved our Silver Queen inside last month. She looks happy, I did cut back some new growth, but the house stays about 68 and you can just tell a happy plant. Your cuttings look great and yes, they are well rooted! A lucky bidder will be pleased.

I agree chanc4~~she is 87yrs old. and her plants have always lived HER lifestyle and her way is great. Her results are great and I don't think she could kill anything by her methods! However I have come over noticed something missing and found it in her compost pile!!!!! (yep big garden even at 87!) Don't worry I always rescue them.

But I have noticed when I do grow things cooler, they seem to do better. Not 45F cooler. Just a little cooler.

However she does it she sure has a "magic" touch!!! You should have seen her african violets and orchids! (Yep, they spent time in the cool room during winter also! Go figure!!!)
