Description

The listing, 170 Year Old Newspaper "The Philadelphia Sun" dated October 25, 1844 - Free Shipping! has ended.

Step back in time nearly two centuries by reading this museum quality copy of The Philadelphia Sun newspaper dated October 25, 1844. The original newstand price was ONE CENT.

This is the entire newspaper not just clippings. It is 4 pages long on two sheets of 6 columns of tiny print. This was the typical size and style of that era.

Newspapers printed after 1799 and prior to 1860 are considered "Antebellum Papers" and were printed on naturally acid free "rag linen" paper so they held up much better than our newspapers of today. There are no illustrations but that is also typical of Antebellum papers since illustrations didn't become popular until several decades after this paper was printed.

This one is slightly yellowed and has been folded. There are no rips or tears and it is in excellent condition in my opinion.

The front page has an article about why Isaac Hare should get a new trial for his murder conviction related to the Kensington riot. Apparently is was discovered after conviction that one of the jurors had already declared Mr. Hare's guilt before the original trial. This is fascinating reading!!!

There are also classified ads, advertisements with prices, an article about yellow fever in New Orleans, updates about the US Frigate Raritan and Sloop of War Fairfield, etc. They packed so many interesting items in this newspaper I couldn't possible mention them all.

There is also a printing error on page 3 where there was a wrinkle in the paper when the press came down on it. It's just a little over an inch long and doesn't interfere with reading the print but I thought I'd that little detail as it was a characteristic of newspaper printing in that era.

This is an original newspaper printed in the year 1844. It is NOT a reproduction. The date on it is correct. It will celebrate it's 170th "birthday" this weekend. Thank you for asking!

The newspaper is NOT as yellow as it appears in the photos. I have florescent lighting inside and it makes photos look yellow. The first photo and the last were taken in natural light and show the coloring more accurately. It is never a good idea to store an old newspaper in natural light but I took it to my patio for less than a minute only to take those shots and immediately brought it back inside.

My husband wants to know if you have another for sale. He wants to buy it from you. I don't have enough credits to "get it now."
