The listing, 170 Year Old Newspaper "The Philadelphia Sun" dated October 25, 1844 - Free Shipping! has ended.
Step back in time nearly two centuries by reading this museum quality copy of The Philadelphia Sun newspaper dated October 25, 1844. The original newstand price was ONE CENT.
This is the entire newspaper not just clippings. It is 4 pages long on two sheets of 6 columns of tiny print. This was the typical size and style of that era.
Newspapers printed after 1799 and prior to 1860 are considered "Antebellum Papers" and were printed on naturally acid free "rag linen" paper so they held up much better than our newspapers of today. There are no illustrations but that is also typical of Antebellum papers since illustrations didn't become popular until several decades after this paper was printed.
This one is slightly yellowed and has been folded. There are no rips or tears and it is in excellent condition in my opinion.
The front page has an article about why Isaac Hare should get a new trial for his murder conviction related to the Kensington riot. Apparently is was discovered after conviction that one of the jurors had already declared Mr. Hare's guilt before the original trial. This is fascinating reading!!!
There are also classified ads, advertisements with prices, an article about yellow fever in New Orleans, updates about the US Frigate Raritan and Sloop of War Fairfield, etc. They packed so many interesting items in this newspaper I couldn't possible mention them all.
There is also a printing error on page 3 where there was a wrinkle in the paper when the press came down on it. It's just a little over an inch long and doesn't interfere with reading the print but I thought I'd that little detail as it was a characteristic of newspaper printing in that era.
