The 100th anniversary of the 1781 Siege of Yorktown was the first national celebration in the South after the Civil War and an opportunity for North and South to honor a common heritage. At Yorktown on October 18, 1881, Confederate and Union veterans placed a time capsule with Civil War relics under the cornerstone of the Monument to Alliance and Victory, a monument commemorating the 1781 siege.
