Joss paper are sheets of paper that are burned in traditional Chinese deity or ancestor worship ceremonies during special holidays. Joss paper, as well as other papier-mâché items, are also burned in traditional Chinese funerals, to ensure that spirit of the deceased has lots of good things in the afterlife.

No, these are not replicas. Hell Banks are not used as real currency in the real world. The Chinese and other Asian countries burn these during ceremonies and the belief is that burning the hell banks will provide our ancestors with money in the underworld. In other words, these are supposed to be money for the dead. I guess that is kind of a scary thought haha. I hope this clarifies what hell bank notes are used for. :)
