Description

The listing, Devil's Claw (Unicorn Plant) seeds Native American organically grown FREE SHIPPING has ended.

This auction is for 10 seeds of this fantastic heat-loving and drought tolerant plant that even does well in the desert. This native American plant has edible pods and seeds, seed pods that are good for crafts, and thrives in hot, dry conditions. It doesn't seem to be bothered by insects, but our goats like to eat the flowers. It's a plant that was widely cultivated by Native Americans who grew it for food, and for basket-weaving materials.

The photos here were taken in early September of some plants that volunteered here, self-seeded from some we had planted last year. Here in Central Texas, they sprout fairly early in the year, and even small plants have some flowers, but they don't really grow a lot until the weather gets HOT. Some of these plants are now about 4 feet wide, and nearly 3feet tall, They're growing in ground that dried and had huge cracks from the drought, and I"VE NOT BEEN WATERING THEM, during the summer. Please check out the info in the links to see some great photos and learn more about growing these! There is more than one variety of this plant, but this one is an annual with black seeds, and light pinkish-purplish flowers that have a yellow strip on the throat and are about 1 1/2 inches tall and one inch wide . Early in the season the flowers and plants did have an odor that was not attractive, but since mid-summer they haven't seemed to have any odor. The young raw pods can be pickled, or eaten raw, and taste somewhat like cucumber. Here are some links with more info and some great photos!
