Description

The listing, BEAUTIFUL!!! Air Potato Bulb...running Vine.... has ended.

I love when it comes back every year.Air potato (Dioscorea bulbifera)Covered with large handsome leaves, it can quickly grow 60-70 feet in length, which is long enough to over-top (and shade-out) tall trees. A member of the yam family (Dioscoreaceae), air potato produces large numbers of aerial tubers, potato-like growths attached to the stems. These grow into new plants.

In researching the Air Potato it is considered a invasive plant. Spreading freely, it covers trees up to 70 feet high and blocks the sun light, causing the trees to die. The air potato spread by the potatoes that fall to the ground , In Florida, The Air Potato is a invasive species, enveloping large areas in a blanket of vines that block other plants and trees access to sunlight. There is some debate about the Air potato being edible and even some speculation, that it is poisonous. The Air Potato is more a kin to the Yam family. While having potatoes on vines that you don`t need to dig out of the ground is attractive. The questions about the Air potato is causing me to rethink my participation in this auction and I have decided not to participate. You can research the Air potato on the internet and you tube. By Searching word Air Potato. You are left to your own conclusion.

As a ornamental, the Air potato is a attractive plant. With the proper care. It would be a beautiful addition to a Botanical Garden, Park , or anywhere else that its growth could be contained. What initially attracted me to this auction, was how beautiful the vine was. As a food plant, more confirmation on its ability to be used as food needs to be confirmed. Here in Hawaii, There are strict rules for bringing in invasive species, be it plants or animals, fines as well as Jail time. My hesitation to acquire the Air Potato plant is influenced by this factor. I believe the Air Potato is a beautiful plant to acquire, if care is taken, once it is acquired concerning containment, state regulations and Law, and if considering it as a food source, to confirm that the Air Potato is safe to eat. The only reason I commented was other potential bidders had questions and when deciding to bid on a item, one must be fully informed. My intention is information , and it is not meant to degrade your item in any way. I will be watching this auction. out of curiosity. I wish you great success in your auction and hope the winning bidder is generous . You have many watchers and now one more. Good Luck and wishing you well.

Thank you and I'm so glad that I have you here looking at my auction because other than the research that I have done on my air potato (plant/bulb) you are right. I had to find out all this before I put it here but found out from my own dealing with the plant and containing it that I pretty much keep it maintained to one side of my home and it grows so pretty I used to live in a town home and I planted it in pots so that it would run up the gate for privacy it worked great .I have not heard of one having any problems in Texas with state regulations and Laws but the information is great to know. And I really do appreciate all the feed back and I hope that others will learn from our chat here today. Thank you kindly.

I love this!! My biggest concern is whether it will survive outdoors here in Washington State. We have a LOT of rain and some pretty bad winters. I see you only talk about Texas, Florida and Hawaii. These states are completely different from here. I am very interested but don't want something i can't grow here. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I am watching and have fanned. Please fan back. Thank you, Bonnie

I live in the Northern part of Kentucky and we can have very cold winters. I planted the bulb potatoes outside and they came back for the last two years voluntarily as vines.

Know I would not eat and I have not eaten them. But in my research I have heard that people do eat but I'm not sure that would be wise until you have done major research on the bulb and my ask a professional about.

I love the look of this plant! We have harsh winters....do you think it would do ok as an indoor ornamental plant? Also, do you pull the potato like thing and plant it to create new plants? I'm sorry you are having to deal with criticism about listing this plant....either bid or not....that is my philosophy :D. Watching and bidding :) oh also fanning!
