As far as the 1 yr free service, I dunno. I bought this and ever used it. There is more info on the web about it (I have included a home shopping tv link) that will give more info. I think its $9.95 a month and unlimited long distance. They are saying no internet connection required, as opposed to VOIP which requires a high speed connection. Hope that helps
