On Decembee 15, 1981, a small charter plane carrying four men went down on Mount McKinley, one of the highest and coldest spots on earth. After four nights spent suffering in and around the wreckage, two of the men were rescued-the other two were lost.

It is also a memoir of the 20 years it took Hommer to recover-body and soul- from the accident, which occured when he was only 27 years old. Left without his lower legs, Hommer spiraled into dispair, straining his relationship with his wife to the breaking point. Finally, inspired by the physical challenge and the goodwill of close friends, Hommer decided to turn his life around. Using state of the art prosthetics, he learned how to walk, cycke, and mountain climb in preperation for his ultimate triumph: conquering the mountain that had almost killed him. On the second attempt, in ,1999, Ed Hommer was victorious-he reached the summit of Mount McKinley.
