Chiltepin is a southwest sonoran species. Grows primarily in the Southwest. Here in Tucson, AZ. we are fortunate to have what is considered to be the "Mother of all chilies". Some consider this to be the hottest of all peppers, and others rate it 8/10 Hot or 50K-100k Scoville Heat Index..
Chiltepines are harvested in the fall, typically over a one-month period that typically begins the middle of October. The plants are commonly found growing under the cover of leguminous nurse plants like mesquite and can be difficult to access in the wild. When sowing seed they do best when those conditions are replicated. They prefer full sun, some shade and are frost sensitive; planting against a south facing wall can help create an ideal microclimate for the plants. Indoor or container planting helps overcome limitations of cooler climate zones.
Nonetheless, chiltepines are very ornamental bushes. They also deter pests and creatures
Many people use Tepins to flavor various southwest mexican cuisine, or make uniquely flavored salsas or sauces. Tex-Mex food is often spiced with Chiltepin.
