You can start them indoors close to to last frost to start them out. They are very easy to start and easy to grow. I grow them in my own compost dirt and they come up fast.

Will they grow in upstate ny? And do they come back every year?

They grow and produce so quickly that you will have more than enough seed at the end of the season. I have pruned back some of my plants and made clones, just to see if I could do it. Where I pruned it flowered and produced even better. Being in upstate NY, your root would probably freeze but you will have plenty of seed for next year.

Both in the ground and in pots. They are easy to grow either way. I actually sell them in pots but love mine that are growing amongst the flowers because everything about this is fascinating. When they are young the leaves have a purple tinge, the flowers are purple and the pepper is purple at first then pale yellow to bright yellow and turning orange to a perfect red..

Yes I do. About 1 1/2hrs. South of me. If you grow these peppers in the ground. They comeback from the roots every year. Not sure of this year though with the hard freezes we been having. It got down down to 24 here last week.
