Description

The listing, Detroit Dark Red Beet Seeds has ended.

This variety produces early, very dark red and extremely sweet roots up to 3" across. It's good fresh, canned or frozen. The beets are delicious but the tops are good cooked or in salads too.

Sun: Full Sun
Spread: 4 inches
Height: 8-10 inches
Days to Maturity: 59 days
Sowing Method: Direct Sow

The beets will send up a stalk with a flower head. The flower head will dry out and the seeds will be there to harvest. They generally grow in clusters. Pick the seed heads when they are dry and brown. That's usually around Sept. Not hard to do. By the way, the greens have more vitamins than the beets. Both are good for eating.

Beet Leaf Recipe:
Make a batch of bread dough or use store bought bread dough. Take small pieces, about 1" round, and wrap in a single beet leaf. (for one 3 cups of flour dough recipe, I used a colander full of large beet leaves. ) Place on a cookie sheet that is lined with parchment paper, fairly close together. Allow to rise, until double in size, about 1 hour. bake for about 20 -25 min, at 350. Store covered in frig.Next day, fry chopped onion & garlic, add 1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup milk, 1 cup shredded cheddar, and the pan full of beet wrapped bread. cook until heated through and the cheese is melted, toss in some finely chopped dill and salt and pepper to taste. May need to add a bit more milk if sauce is too thick.

I actually haven't counted how many I add. I would guess about 20 to 25 seeds. It's enough to get started
