Commemorates man’s first footstep on the moon’s surface by Neil Armstrong, Commander of the Apollo 11 mission. The first jumbo-sized commemorative issue, it celebrated “moon mail.” The First Day Cover was the most popular ever.

1969 Moon Landing
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, followed by Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, became the first man to stand on the moon. As Armstrong stepped out of the Apollo 11 lunar module, the Eagle, he spoke the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Later, Armstrong commented to Aldrin, “It has a stark beauty all its own. It’s like much of the high desert in the United States. It’s different, but it’s pretty out here.”

This First Man on the Moon issue was the first jumbo-size American commemorative. The engraved master die to this stamp accompanied the astronauts all the way to the moon’s surface. An envelope bearing a proof of the stamp was also canceled in the space module.
