NATURE ON THE RAMPAGE * Our Violent Earth
by National Geographic Society
The horror struck at night - a torrent of mud and water unleashed by the eruption of Colombia's Nevado Del Ruiz on November 13, 1985. In the morning, the city Armero was gone. Green treetops and a few roofs protruded from the mud, hinting at vanished streets and roads. More than 20,000 people were buried here - a piteous and grotesque cemetery.
Through the ages, humankind has sought to comprehend the natural scourges so vividly depicted in this book - earthquakes and volcanic upheavals, droughts and floods, hurricanes and tornadoes, biological outbreaks ranging from locust plagues to epidemic diseases.
But even as our ability to explain and forecast nature's rampages increases, our vulnerability to them remains a humbling reality.
